Description: Hands On: Planting the Winter Vegetable Garden, at Westbury Community Garden
Gardeners in Houston can harvest a bounty of vegetables in winter. Take the guesswork out of your gardening and experience how it’s done in a working garden. This outdoor class will get you ready to do it all on your own. Learn about the types of pests, diseases and problems that appear on winter crops, as well as transplanting of seedlings, soil preparation, fertilizing and more. The list of vegetables in the winter garden includes beets, bok choy, cabbage, collards, lettuce, multiplying onion, mustard, snow peas, sugar snap peas, Irish potatoes, turnips, arugula, cress, leeks, mizuna, nasturtium edible flowers, English peas, and parsley. Dress for getting dirty, wear closed toe shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen and water. We have a large sheltered area for teaching. Class will be called off only if you receive a phone call.
