- Winifred Hamilton: shining a light on Houston’s environment-related health issues (Vicki Wolf – CLEAN, 07/27/2012)
Winifred Hamilton has taken many steps to educate others about the correlation between health and the environment. Houston is a large city with a larger industrial component than most cities, and development is continuing without adequately looking at the short-term and long-term health effects. However, the community can contribute to improving the environment in multiple ways.

Houston has been experiencing more rain and lower temperatures this summer than last. However, much of the rest of the state is still experiencing dry cloudless conditions, and the possibility of rolling blackouts across the state is still high. Residents are encouraged to conserve energy with a few small changes.

Last year’s wildfires and drought really hurt state parks, causing a decrease in visitors, and therefore, a decrease in revenue. Texas Parks & Wildlife Department turned to the public for help, hoping to raise more than $4 million in donations, but only received half that amount. In addition, recent budge cuts have taken away over a hundred million dollars from the department. As a result, TPWD is now looking for corporate sponsors.
