Title: Summer Salon Series: My Degree Counts
Location: Canopy on Montrose 3939 Montrose Blvd. Houston, TX 77006

Description: Our region faces a shortage of critical talent in high demand professions that will likely persist for years. Center for Houston’s Future’s 2012 Community Indicator Report: Human Capital Development and Education indicates the gap will not be easily filled by our community and four-year colleges.

The August Summer Salon features the Center’s bold new initiative, My Degree Counts, which tackles the region’s talent shortage by increasing college completion.

Did you know:

Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S., but it is 34th in college attainment, with a 28.4% four-year and a 6% two-year degree attainment rate.
Higher graduation rates benefit not only the economy, but also health, voting, public safety, quality of place, etc.
Children are likelier to go college if at least one parent has gone to college.
While just 4.3% of Americans with four-year degrees are unemployed, 15% of those without a high school diploma do not have a job.
An individual will make twice as much over his/her lifetime with a Bachelor’s degree than with only a high school degree.
