The drought in Houston has ended, and has now been experiencing very heavy rainfall. Some of the lakes and aquifers are still thirsty but are seeing continued recovery. Lake Conroe, for example, is within a couple of feet of its full pool of 201 feet.

Mayor Annise Parker recently announced the formation of a Water Conservation Task Force. This is a step in monitoring long-term water supply and water conservation. The Task Force will review water supply options and conservation measures for Houston, and may also look at other ideas to diversify the City’s water supply, including recycled water for irrigation, greywater use, rainwater harvesting and desalination among other ideas.

The Energy Department is set to award $30 million in grants to propel research on powering cars and trucks with natural gas nationwide, including two projects in Texas. The grants are aimed at helping overcome a major hurdle in deploying vehicles powered by natural gas: their historic reliance on tanks that can withstand high pressures, and are generally too large or expensive for passenger vehicles.
