Title: Houston Urban Gardeners (HUG) Meeting
Location: Houston Garden Center, 1500 Hermann Dr. in Hermann Park
Link out: Click here
Description: The next meeting of HUG will be Monday April 9 at 6:30 PM at the
Houston Garden Center, 1500 Hermann Dr. in Hermann Park, Houston
(713-284-1989). To access the parking lot go to Golf Course Drive (recently
renamed Hermann Park Dr.) and enter the lot right across from Miller Outdoor
Theater. David Cater will entertain us with a presentation on Utility
Research Garden (URG). His color slides will illustrate how URG functions
and is managed. URG grows and sells vegetables and bamboo. In warmer weather
David chooses southeast Asian varieties of crops that thrive in our long hot
summers and provide good nutrition–things like wing beans and amaranth
greens. (Scroll down for more information.)
So come on down! Grab a cup of fresh coffee or tea and a snack.
Learn more about this model farm/garden that has a successful business of
growing and selling food, and has fun while doing it. And meet some
like-minded people while you’re at it.

David Cater, Utility Research Garden
David Cater is an engaging, creative, articulate and humorous
character. At his URG website he says, “Although we call ourselves the
Utility Research Garden and we prepare materials to try and make our
operation seem more professional than it actually is, we are really just a
band of merry pranksters with a love of nature and pessimism about our
chances in the future. As individuals, we are a motley crew.” It goes on to
say that David is the owner/manager of the “joint”.
One thing of many that most people find interesting about URG is
that the workers live in a 700 sq. ft. yurt (circular tent) that was
purchased as a kit. URG is innovative, forward-looking and quirky. So URG
is more than a farm. It’s a different kind of life style as well as way to
make a living.
