Coalition Notes 03-19-2012

  1. World Water Day Celebration. The Galveston Bay Foundation, Texas Coastal Watershed Program, and Coffee Oasis are putting together a celebration for World Water Day on March 22nd from 6-9pm at Coffee Oasis (4650 Nasa Road 1). The celebration will include cups of coffee, intriguing conversations, live music, raffle drawings, kid-friendly activities, and information on how you can help to preserve, protect and enhance our water resources.   2. Friends of Mandell Park Plant Sale. Saturday, March 24, 2012, 9: 00 am to 1:00 pm at Mandell Park at the corner of Richmond Ave. and Mandell Street Quality plants, El Pueblito breakfast tacos, Le Creperie crepes, The Black Hole coffee, raffle of great items and Tradition Bank’s Children’s Corner with dirt and plants and face painting. Friends of Mandell Park is hoping to get started this fall implementing its plan for the park. More at www.friendsofmandellpark.org.
  3. Texas Wildlife & Woodland Expo & Spring Fling. The Texas Wildlife & Woodland Expo & Spring Fling will be held on March 24th from 10am-4pm at Lone Star College-Montgomery. The expo is an annual event that is designed to help families learn a little about the land on which they live and how to best take care of it. There will be free, hands-on clinics and live demonstrations that will teach how to nourish plants and trees, attract wildlife, collect and use rainwater, and protect homes from wildfires. This year, there is a special emphasis on helping residents recover from drought and wildfires. More at http://expo.tamu.edu/.
  4. Houston Green Film Series: “Forks Over Knives”. The next film of the Houston Green Film Series will be shown on March 28th at 6:30pm at the Rice Media Center (2030 University Blvd). The film, “Forks Over Knives”, explores the relationship between diet and illness by following the lives of patients as doctors guide them in switching to plant-based and whole food diets to treat their illness ranging from heart disease to diabetes.   5. Tools & Resources for Managing & Conserving Texas Grasslands. Native Prairies Association of Texas is holding a landowner workshop, Tools & Resources for Managing & Conserving Texas Grasslands, at the Texas AgriLIFE Extension Offices-Angleton, (21017 County Road 171) from 9:15am-4pm on March 29th. The workshop will cover a variety of topics including “Prairies, Texas Ecological and Historical Heritage, less than 1% remains….”, “Quail & Grassland Bird Habitat Management in Texas”, and “Benefits & Incentives of Land Trust Easements”.   6. Jones Park Photo Contest. A contest is great incentive for roving the trails looking for a great shot! Two divisions are available: Adult, 16 and older, and junior, 15 and younger. One photo may be submitted for each category: wildlife, scenic/wildflowers, and people in the park. Only photos taken between May 1, 2011 and Monday, April 30, 2012 in Jones Park will be considered. Check web site at www.hcp4.net/jones for more details. Deadline is Monday, April 30, or postmarked by Wednesday, April 25 if mailed.
  7. TNC Picnic for the Planet. The Nature Conservancy is promoting Picnic for the Planet throughout Texas. Picnic for the Planet is the world’s largest Earth Day celebration on April 22nd. You can attend an event in your area or even sign up to host one! Picnics can be done with your family, in the work place, or at your children’s schools.   8. Volunteer group plays in the sand to help sea turtle moms. The volunteer group Artist Boat is rebuilding sea turtle nesting dunes washed away by Hurricane Ike so returning turtles can safely burry their eggs before returning to sea. The dunes also provide habitat for several threatened and endangered birds as they make their way from North to South America. The nonprofit Galveston group participates in ecosystem preservation and restoration projects throughout the coastal area. For more information on the group visit www.artistboat.org.
  9. Organizations for Student Conservation Association Interns. The Student Conservation Association is looking for environmental organizations in need of Summer 2012 and Fall 2012 interns! SCA’s Houston Conservation Collaborative internship program partners with local organizations to provide full and/or part-time, paid conservation internships in the Houston area. SCA interns work on projects that range from trail construction and wildlife management to environmental educationvand marketing. Give 5 for Conservation. On Saturday, April 21, the Katy Prairie Conservancy and four other Houston-area conservation groups — Bayou Land Conservancy, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Galveston Bay Foundation, and Houston Audubon — are collaborating for the inaugural Give 5% campaign!
