Description: Did you know . . .

Texas ranked 9th highest in the country for child poverty with 1,751,189 children or
25.7% of children living in poverty.

28.2% of children in Texas are food insecure (compared to the national child food
insecurity rate of 23.2%).

Last year on an average day, over 300,000 students in the Greater Houston area were
eligible for a free school breakfast, but did not receive one.

In Texas, 56.1% of low-income students participated in the School Breakfast Program
for every 100 students participating in the National School Lunch Program during the
2009 – 2010 school year.

The luncheon will focus on the critical areas of childhood hunger, universal school
breakfast, childhood obesity, and food policy priorities for the next legislative
session.

Speakers include:
Dr. Bob Sanborn, President and CEO, CHILDREN AT RISK
Brian Greene, President/CEO, Houston Food Bank
Dr. Claire Bocchini, President, Doctor’s for Change
Brian Giles, Senior Administrator, HISD Food Services
Representative Carol Alvarado – District 145

Participants will have an opportunity to engage in discussion of each of these four
areas in order to increase their understanding of the issues and develop their own
plan of action. Registration is only $25 and includes lunch! Register now:
