Description: From June 11-15, 2012, the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory will hold our first ever summer day camp on birds and birding for ages 8-11. Our goal is to meet a recognized need for children to get outside and experience nature. The Texas Children in Nature Strategic Plan states “Research shows that children who play outdoors are more likely to be vigorously active and are less likely to have weight and health problems.” Specifically there is a reduced risk of myopia, asthma and vitamin D deficiency. We can’t think of a better venue or topic to get kids moving and learning simultaneously than GCBO and birds. The backbone of the week will come from GCBO’s Coastal Wild Bird Trunk.
