Invasive Plants of Houston Class

Title: Invasive Plants of Houston Class
Location: Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Link out: Click here
Description: As more homeowners become aware of the advantages of a native plant landscape – less water usage, drought tolerant, disease resistance, better habitat for insect pollinators, migratory birds, and urban wildlife – the questions arise: “Which non-native plants should I remove? Which native plants are suitable substitutes?”

Using an array of online and printed resources, join Conservation Director Joe Blanton for an introductory tour of the world of invasive plants. The classroom presentation will be followed by a walking tour of the Arboretum’s grounds to see six species that fulfill the legal definition of an invasive: a species that occurs in an area, region, ecosystem or habitat in which it did not originate and causes negative economic and environmental impact on the landscape and to human health.

Learn how yesteryear’s landscaping choices are negatively affecting today’s health of our local forest ecosystem and what conservation-minded volunteers are doing to further our mission to protect and enhance the Arboretum as a haven and as a sanctuary for native plants and animals.
