Memorial Park Forestry Plan Update

Description: As the steward overseeing the urban forest, MPC has engaged several professional foresters over the past 10 years to study the forest. Each result was the same – the forest is in serious decline and a forestry management program needs to be implemented to ensure a strong and healthy forest for future generations of Houstonians. The information obtained from thestudies has reinforced what is visible by walking the trails today – the serious decline of a unique urban forest. Over time a dense understory has developed to shade out new growth while many of the Park’s mature pines and oaks have died or declined (due to age, insect damage, disease, and natural causes such as hurricanes). Without implementation of a forest management strategy, the majestic pine and hardwood canopy will gradually disappear.
