Community Notes 06-22-2011

  1. Climate Protection Award. Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker received the 2011 U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Award for implementing the Houston Green Office Challenge. The Green Office Challenge encourages commercial building managers and tenants to reduce energy consumption, water usage and waste production by 10 to 50 percent.   2. Hands Across the Sand. Hands Across the Sand (“Yes to Clean Energy”) will be held on June 25 at locations around the country. In Texas, there are events taking place in Austin, Corpus Christi, and South Padre Island. Hands Across the Sand is a movement that allows people to champion clean energy solutions to the filthy fuels problem. For more information, visit http://www.handsacrossthesand.com/.
  3. Duck Stamp Sale. The 78th Federal Duck Stamp will go on sale on June 24th with a ceremony at 9am at Bass Pro’s Outdoor World at Katy Mills Mall. 98 cents of every dollar raised by the stamps go to the purchase or lease of wetlands around the country. The speakers at the event will include artists James Hautmann and Abraham Hunter, representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Postal Service, Bass Pro Shops and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Executive Director Carter Smith.
