Coalition Notes 06-15-2011

  1. Healthy Green Book Club. Environmental Educators’ Exchange is starting a new book club at Green Planet Sanctuary for adults interested in reading and learning about nature, nutrition, and the environment. The group will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7-8pm. Jeannine Perrot will facilitate the meetings. For more information, contact her at japerrot@gmail.com or 281‐630‐3652.
  2. Help the Thirsty Trees. Trees for Houston is asking communities to begin watering the trees in their neighborhoods to reduce the damage of the drought. They have released tips for saving trees including:
    • Judicious watering and fertilization.
    • Removing weeds and grass that compete with the trees for water.
    • Watching for yellowing leaves and premature leaf drop, which are early signs of drought damage.
  3. Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant. Blueprint Houston is a member of the Coordinating Committee for the Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program. The grant involves the interaction of land use, transportation, housing, health, economic development, infrastructure, and environment. Work groups are being formed to develop the plan. To become involved, visit http://www.gosustainablenow.org/.
  4. Texas Conservation Action Plan. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is seeking online public input as it revises its wildlife action plan. The purpose of the Texas Conservation Action Plan is to encourage land owners, natural resource professionals and the public to preserve our natural heritage for future generations.  Online comments will be accepted until July 8th.
