- Annual Tree Sale. Green Team America and Green Bank are celebrating Arbor Day with an annual tree sale. Native tree species will be sold including Live Oak, Cedar Elm, Southern Magnolia, Crape Myrtles, and many more. - Story of Stuff. From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues. The event is hosted by Air Alliance Houston and Talento Bilingue De Houston. - 4 the Park Fun Run. The third annual “4 the Park” Fun Run benefiting Memorial Park Conservancy is Saturday, April 2, 2011, beginning and ending in Memorial Park. Participation in the “4 the Park” Fun Run helps the Conservancy to plan, protect and preserve Memorial Park. - Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition Strategic Plan Community Input Workshops. The Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition and the National Park Service invite you to join us at one or more community planning workshops in February to help develop a strategic corridor plan for Greens Bayou. The goals of the project are to:
- Conserve the corridor’s most important natural and cultural resources
- Create a diverse system of recreation opportunities
- Manage the corridor’s natural and improved landscaping
- Foster a system of interconnected parks and trails that link neighborhoods and destinations
- Assure that projects are sustainably designed and are maintained for years to come For the purpose of this study, the Greens Bayou Corridor is defined as the area on either side of the bayou running 45 miles from US 290 to the Houston Ship Channel. The study focuses on conservation, recreation and connectivity. This series of community planning workshops will be held in various locations throughout the corridor on February 24, and 25. - Saving the Bay. GBF and the Houston Green Scene will be hosting a preview screening of the documentary, Saving the Bay. Producer Ron Blatman will be at the screening to provide introductory remarks. The one hour screening will be followed by a panel of local experts discussing restoration efforts in Galveston Bay. The preview will take place on March 3rd at 6 pm at the George R. Brown Education Center Auditorium at the Houston Zoo. For more information, visit http://www.galvbay.org/.
- Spring Break Camp. There are still openings for the spring break camp from March 14-18 at the The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education and Recreation Center. Children will spring into fun-filled nature activities during this five day camp that will light a passion for the outdoors while teaching them about the many things nature has to offer. - Central City Co-op on Television. “Going Green With Yolanda Green” filmed a segment of its show at Central City Co-op last week. The producers of the show expect that the segment is expected to air this weekend (although plans do change at the last minute). Central City Co-op is expected to be on Channel 39 (KIAH-TV Houston) this Saturday at noon and Sunday at 10am.
- The Mongol Rally 2011. Buffalo Bayou Partnership is the charity partner for Texas 2 Steppe, a team registered for an an unassisted charity road race that begins in London and ends in Mongolia. In the race, there is no predetermined route, no infrastructure, and no support of any kind, and teams have to complete the race in a car with an engine smaller than 1.2L.
