Description: An Open House for the Big Thicket National Preserve Field Research
Station, 16890 FM 770, in Saratoga is being hosted by the Big Thicket
Association.
The facility is being used by researchers and students from universities
around the country who are interested in studying the Big Thicket. The
building provides comfortable housing for short term stays, a kitchen and
classroom meeting space. In 2006 the Thicket of Diversity All Taxa
Biodiversity Inventory was launched. This amazing project is attempting
to inventory
all species in the Preserve and has discovered new species to the state
and even the world! Currently about 20 groups called TWIGS, Taxanomic
Inventory Working Groups, are underway. Led by professionals, the TWIGS
tap the
assistance of volunteers called Citizen Scientists.

program is modeled after
the successful Great Smoky Mountains National Park Discover Life in America and is part of the US Park Service’s National Biodiversity Initiative.
On Thursday, Feb. 17th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, Big Thicket Association
members will be available to discuss the goals and accomplishments of the
organization and to conduct tours of the facility. Refreshments will be
served. It will also be an opportunity to meet and greet the new
Executive Director, Dr. Teresa Tomkins-Walsh.
