Description: The Gulf of Mexico is much more than the simple sum of the parts along the shoreline of five states. It is a grand, interconnected water body that spans five states and portions of three countries. In THE STATE OF THE GULF – AMERICA’S SEA, a documentary scheduled to air on Texas PBS stations in late February, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department dives right in to explore this vast body of water. The film examines the Gulf’s unique ecology, diverse flora and fauna and important habitats that nurture a bounty of fish and wildlife including endangered species such as whooping cranes and the Kemps’ Ridley sea turtle. Then there are the forces that threaten the Gulf: industry, pollution, powerful hurricanes, climate change and disasters like the recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill – a drama with biological and economic ramifications that continue to unfold. Protecting and managing America’s sea is an overwhelming and challenging task, but collaborative efforts being made by a multitude of state, federal, international, public and private entities are essential. Carter Smith, Executive Director of Texas Parks and Wildlife, and other Gulf of Mexico experts will be on hand at the screening to discuss these challenges and how everyone can play a role in the restoration and protection of this valuable resource.

The scope of this documentary is as vast as the Gulf itself – and far too much to cover in this brief description. So come see it for yourself.
