  1. Water needs of proposed Colorado River power plant churn opposition (Asher Prise – The Statesman, 10/6/2010)
The Colorado River water is becoming increasingly valuable. At this time there is a proposed coal-fired plant downriver of Austin. The project was proposed after the TCEQ approved an air pollution permit over the protests of environmental groups and the EPA. Advocates claim that the water is needed to support Texas’ growth.

  2. Texas shoreline in danger as funding tide ebbs (Matthew Tresaugue – Houston Chronicle, 10/18/2010)
A lack of funding likely means that there will be no money to rebuild eroding beaches or replace vanishing wetlands on the Texas coast. Two-thirds of the Texas coast is considered to be critically eroding because of storms, rising seas, and man-made features. There is a large push for the state government to address the problem.

  3. UH Geologists: Northwest ‘Burbs Still Sinking (KUHF News, 10/19/2010)
Researchers at the University of Houston have confirmed that parts of Houston are sinking more than two inches per year. It has been known that the area has been sinking for many years now, but new data reveals where the subsidence is occurring and its rate. The subsidence has been caused by developers extracting groundwater faster than the rain can replenish it. The problem may also be worsened by underground fault lines and salt domes.
