Next training class starts Monday, September 13, 2011 with a three hour orientation and a five hour hands-on learning session. The Texas Master Naturalist Heartwood Chapter, based in Montgomery County, is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to training and organizing volunteers inspired by nature. Using lectures, printed materials, field observations, and community volunteer projects to pursue their mission.
In 2009, 43 Master Naturalist members donated 5,726 hours to nature projects and the natural areas in Montgomery County and neighboring counties of Walker County and Harris County.
* Direct Outreach: educational talks, nature walks, workshops for specialized training
* Indirect Outreach: booths, articles, pamphlets, posters, signs, web site, Chapter newsletter
* Scientific data collection: birds, bats, butterflies, native plants, trees, turtles, frogs
* Habitat maintenance: trails, prairies, Wildscape demonstration gardens, wildflower meadows, carnivorous plant bog, ponds, water ways trash bash, recycled fishing line
* Operational tasks: activity planning, preparations, and clean up; organizing the office and educational materials
* Administrative tasks: Officer’s duties, membership records, ordering materials and awards
Unique to the Heartwood Chapter is the Fall training using Texas Master Naturalist state-wide curriculum in a way that is highly focused field-trip based learning experience and will cover: Intro to the Texas Master Naturalist program, Texas Naturalists prior to World War II, Ecological Concepts, Ecological Regions of Texas, Ecosystem Management, Geology and Soils of Texas, Weather and Climate, Nature of Naming, Plants, Ornithology, Entomology, Ichthyology (Fishes), Herpetology, Mammalogy, Archeology, Forest Ecology and Management.
Those accepted to the Fall Training class will need to be able to walk for several miles, work outdoors, conduct field work on-site for up to four hours and ride in van for long periods of time to and from locations. Classes are every Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting September 13 to October 25. For a less rigorous class enroll in the Spring 2011 Intern training class, which has more classroom training and easy to do field studies.
