Playwright and ethnodramatist Tifani Pust delves into Houston’s environmental issues voiced by local residents. Houston Speaks uses the personal narratives of Houston residents as the foundation for the work, which explores the firsthand experience of Houstonians living in the environment of our city. Pust combines the narrative of an older generation of Houstonians who participated in the original interview session with the experiences of the younger generation of actors who will perform the work.
This ethnodrama is a new distinctive genre of theatre sometimes hailed as “reality theater” that focuses on the practice of arts-based research in educational ethnography. The goal of the ethnodramatist is to retain the original words spoken by the interviewee as much as possible.
The work will be performed by Greg Hall, Vanessa Alanis, Juan Mejia and Tifani Pust. The performance will be followed by a community talk-back which will allow audience members to voice their own experiences in order to interact with the ideas of the performance. “Talk-backs have become very popular with audiences and playwrights as it enables open communication between audience and author which results in a valuable experience for the community,” added Pust.
