Description: Plastic Pollution Texas was founded in March 2009, by Mike Garver, past president of Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Mike spent many a Saturday on the BBP boat, the Mighty Tidy, skimming debris from the bayou. He realized that there were not enough boats to be built to clean up the waterways of the plastics and other materials that filled the banks and debris booms. He came to believe that legislation could have a lasting impact. So, he has initiated a Bottle Bill for Texas in 2011 to address the collection of aluminum, glass, and plastic beverage containers. There are already 11 other Bottle Bill states, which successfully recycle 75-90% of their beverage containers! The financial incentive of a 10 cent deposit on beverage containers will work for us too. Texas can be the first Bottle Bill state on the Gulf Coast to do the same! Patsy Gillham and Mary Wood, coordinators of Plastic Pollution Texas, and foot soldiers for the Bottle Bill will be sharing the framework of bottle bills, the positive environmental and economic impact, and ways you can support the effort to successfully pass the legislation in 2011.
