Description: Many of our waterways have bacteria levels higher than standards that Texas has set to establish safe waterways for recreational activities such as swimming and wading.
The federal Clean Water Act requires that the state’s environmental agency develop a plan to address this problem. Reducing the amount of bacteria will help provide clean water and allow residents and visitors to enjoy our many rivers, lakes, streams, and bayous safely.
The Bacteria Implementation Group (BIG), comprising representative government, business, and community leaders, was formed by The Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) to develop such a plan. Soon, BIG will determine which activities are cost-effective and who will implement them. Local governments, businesses, community organizations, and individuals will play a part over the next several years.
BIG identified over 150 potential implementation activities; of these, 24 are priority activities addressing wastewater treatment facilities, sanitary sewer systems, stormwater and land development, illicit discharges and dumping, construction, animals and agriculture, residential sources including pet waste, and water quality monitoring.
Rachel Powers, Senior Environmental Planner with HGAC, who is responsible for coordinating BIG activities, will discuss the plan.
