Description: Four Texas A&M University Press authors will headline a discussion of the challenges facing the Gulf Coast region at a Houston Museum of Natural Science-sponsored symposium, “Examining the Texas Coast†on Thursday, Jan. 21.
The symposium, moderated by KPRC Local 2 weather anchor Anthony Yanez, is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in the Wortham IMAX® Theatre, located at One Hermann Circle Drive.
Flanked by a multimedia presentation featuring exclusive images from aerial photographer Bryan Carlile’s book After Ike: Aerial Views from the No-Fly Zone (Texas A&M University Press, 2009), authors and environmental experts John B. Anderson, Jim Blackburn, Carlile, Andrew Sansom and Abby Sallenger (PublicAffairs Press) will deliver presentations on the coast’s unique geology and significant history, as well as the neeed to make smart decisions to protect the future of the coast.
“The Texas coast is a treasure that we don’t value correctly as a society,†said Blackburn, author of The Book of Texas Bays (Texas A&M University Press, 2004). “The more we understand the coast and the better we understand the value of a functional ecological system from an economic perspective, the better off we will be.â€
All in attendance will be eligible to register to win a one-hour aerial tour of Galveston Island by helicopter, provided by Apex Helicopters and guided by Carlile. (Giveaway rules and details located at http://www.hmns.org/.)
The featured authors will sign copies of their respective books immediately after the symposium.
