Description: Rice Design Alliance, with support from the Consulate General of Mexico, will kick off its annual spring lecture series on 3 February 2010 at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This year’s program is Mexico City Surging: DF Architecture, and includes a lineup of young architects and urban planners helping to shape the burgeoning Mexico City landscape. The lectures coincide with Mexico’s year-long celebration of the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence (Día de La Independencia) and the Centennial of The Mexican Revolution (La Revolucíon Mexicana).

Greater Mexico City has a population exceeding 19 million people, making it the second largest metropolitan area in the Americas (after New York City) and the third largest in the world. Its architectural treasures are unmatched in the Western Hemisphere, with its abundance of Pre-Colombian and Colonial structures; radio announcers used to call Mexico City the “City of Palaces” in their daily broadcasts. Mexico City now boasts an extraordinary and growing body of modern architecture, led by a new generation of Mexican architects, planners, and designers.
