International Award for Downtown’s Sabine Promenade.
Buffalo Bayou’s Sabine Promenade (http://www.buffalobayou.org/sabinebagby.html) is the proud recipient of the 2009 Award of Excellence from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Sabine Promenade won the top award in the design category and was selected from nearly 600 entries around the world.
SWA Group designed this award-winning waterfront project that has received a total of 11 local and international honors since the grand opening in 2006. Improvements to the promenade include gently sloping banks leading to the water’s edge, 12 new street-to-bayou entryways,
dramatic artistic lighting, lush native landscaping, and wayfinding and interpretive signage. The park’s amenities include a pedestrian bridge joining the north and south sides of the bayou, hike and bike trails, and bayou-themed public artwork.
The ongoing bayou redevelopment effort is a result of an historic collaboration between numerous public and private partners, a genuine community endeavor, spearheaded by Buffalo Bayou Partnership. The City of Houston, Harris County Flood Control District and the Texas
Department of Transportation were lead funders as well as local foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
