Devon Energy helping restore Houston area’s massive tree loss caused by Hurricane Ike with $10,000 contribution

Much work still under way during mid-year anniversary of hurricane’s landfall.

It was six months ago when thousands of uprooted trees damaged homes and littered the Houston area for weeks as a result of Hurricane Ike, and the work still continues. The considerable loss prompted the demand for thousands of new trees. Devon Energy has stepped in to help by contributing $10,000 to Trees For Houston, an organization that helps improve the city’s tree canopy.  The donation will support the city-wide “Million Trees for Houston”campaign.

“The need for new trees dramatically increased in the wake of Hurricane Ike. Trees For Houston worked with city officials to jump into action and plant a record number of trees this year, but there’s still much to be done,” said Bill Van Wie, Devon’s senior vice president of exploration. “We are proud to partner with the city and Trees For Houston to help replenish Houston’s tree canopy.”

About 50 Devon employees recently helped plant some of these trees at HISD’s Cullen Middle School. “Nature’s destruction sparked an unprecedented loss of trees, and Devon Energy’s contribution is helping restore our community’s urban forest” said Barry Ward, Executive Director of Trees For Houston.
