BILL MCKIBBEN IN HOUSTON APRIL 28

Bill McKibben, environmental author, will be the guest of the Progressive Forum on Monday. I have just finished his newest book, Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, and recommend it highly as a remedy for environmental angst. McKibben begins by writing that, for most of history, “more” was synonymous with “better”. Then he explains why now “more” is not only not “better”, it is bad. He approaches economics in terms of its effects on people, explains the cost of our consumption not only in terms of the strain it puts on our planet, but also the strain it puts our individual and community well-being.

This personalization of economics makes the book easy to understand and relate to – and it also makes the case that reducing our consumption will be rewarding, rather than sacrificial.

McKibben will be speaking at 7:30 pm at Wortham Center, Cullen Theater. Regular tickets from $14 to $54. Discounts for educators, seniors 65 and up, and groups of 10 or more. Books will be for sale after the talk. To purchase tickets, go to the Forum’s website or call (832) 251-0706.
