HEARING ON OFFSHORE AQUACULTURE IN HOUSTON DECEMBER 10
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding a public hearing on its plans for issuing permits to allow industrial fish farming in the Gulf of Mexico. The permits would allow fish to be raised in huge cages in open water. The hearing will be Monday December 10th, from 6 to 9 pm at the Hilton at Hobby Airport, 8181 Airport Boulevard. Currently, industrial fish farming is not allowed in federal waters. See the proposal online (pdf). Food and Water Watch, a consumer advocacy non-profit organization in Washington, DC, is organizing opposition to the plan. For more information, see the organization’s website.
