TEXAS ADOPT-A-BEACH FALL CLEANUP SEPTEMBER 22
The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Program began in the fall of 1986, when 2,800 volunteers picked up 124 tons of trash. Since then, more than 355,000 volunteers have removed 6,700 tons of trash from Texas beaches. The data collected from the beach cleanups played an integral part in the passage of MARPOL Annex V, an international treaty that prohibits the dumping of plastics in the world’s oceans. On Saturday, September 22, there will be clean ups at about 30 sites all the way down the Texas Coast, including ten that are not more than an hour drive from Houston. See the program’s website to choose a work site. Pre-register so preparations can be made. Scenic Galveston and the Sierra Club are putting together work parties.
