PHOTO EXHIBIT OPENS EYES TO ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Citizens League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN) is hosting an exhibit of photographs by Tammy Cromer-Campbell that document the effects of pollution on a rural east Texas town. The exhibition will be open weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm from July 23 to August 31 at 5120 Woodway, Suite 9004. The photographs were taken in Winona a tight-knit community of 500 downwind of a toxic-waste injection well built in 1982. Soon after the plant opened, residents started noticing huge reddish brown clouds rising from the facility and an increase in rates of cancer and birth defects in both humans and animals. The plant finally closed in 1998, citing negative publicity. The University of North Texas Press published Cromer-Campbell’s first book, Fruit of the Orchard/ Environmental Justice in East Texas in the fall of 2006.
