ZOO’S ELEPHANTS ARE TV STARS

Sleeping with the Elephants” will be shown on Channel 8 (KUHT-TV) in Houston on Sunday, May 13 from 6 to 7 pm. Producer Jim Bailey and photographer Mark Susman spent six months with the Houston Zoo’s elephant keepers documenting the day to day care of the Zoo’s three Asian elephants – a 42 year old male named Thai and two females – 16 year old Shanti, and 37 year old Methai. You’ll learn that they like watermelons and cantaloupes, don’t like broccoli or beets, and that they love attention. 

The documentary also provides a rare opportunity to see what went into preparing Shanti for the birth of her second calf, Mac. Director Bailey said, “This is an intimate look into elephant behavior. They are fascinating, complex, and intelligent animals.”
