COMMENTS SOUGHT ON FLOOD PLANS

The Army Corps of Engineers and Harris County Flood Control District have prepared a draft environmental assessment for a flood control project on Braes Bayou. The project site will begin in southwest Houston at the Fondren Road Bridge and continue downstream to the confluence of Brays Bayou with the Houston Ship Channel. The engineers are proposing:

From the mouth of Brays Bayou to Calhoun Street, approximately 6 miles of widening the existing side slopes, with earthen shelves typically ranging from 150 to 210 feet in total width;

From Calhoun to Buffalo Speedway, approximately 6 miles of widening above the existing concrete lining, with earthen shelves typically 30 feet in width on both sides of the channel; and

From Buffalo Speedway to Fondren approximately 5.5 miles of widening above the existing concrete lining, with typically a 50 foot-wide earthen shelf on one side of the channel.

All widening is above the ordinary high water mark.

There will be replacement or modification of 31 bridge sites to accommodate the proposed widening, and there will be approximately 200 acres of excavation on 237 acres of land to provide 1,865 acre-feet of floodwater detention for Willow Waterhole Bayou between Post Oak Road and Chimney Rock Road. Comments on the project should be sent by Nov 5 to
