GET READY FOR FALL VEGETABLES

Urban Harvest’s “Plant the Fall Vegetable Garden” class will be Saturday, July 29, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The class will teach how to prepare the soil, get the right seeds, transplant tomatoes, and have bountiful crops this fall. In Houston, the winter vegetable garden can include cabbage, kale, collards, broccoli, mustard, and other greens; onions, garlic, and chives; an abundance of lettuces and other salad greens; dill, cilantro, and parsley; and a variety of peas and beans. In addition, depending upon the weather, you can have homegrown tomatoes in your holiday salad. The class is taught by Bob Randall, PhD, the author of Year Round Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers for Metro Houston, and horticulturist Diana Liga. This is a very popular class; sign up early. The class is $10 for Urban Harvest members, $30 for nonmembers, and free for community or school gardeners. The class is taught at Urban Harvest, 1900 Kane. For details, call (713) 880-5540.
