Description: The Baytown Nature Center is a 450-acre site on two peninsulas surrounded by three bays. More than 300 species of birds depend on this area for migration, feeding or nesting. This former residential subdivision now features picnic shelters, fishing piers, pavilions and scenic overlooks. There’s also a butterfly garden and bird sanctuary. The Baytown Nature Center, an official site on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, is operated by the City of Baytown. The San Jacinto Battleground Historic Site is a 1200 acre park whose star attraction is the well known 600 ft. tall monument that commemorates the battle which achieved Texas independence. TPWD is restoring the native prairie, tidal marsh and bottomland forest of the battleground to a condition much like it was at the time of the 1836 battle and preserving this vanishing coastal ecosystem for wildlife. They have created several nature trails including a 510 ft. boardwalk & platforms into a tidal marsh and woodlands.
The guide is Dwayne Litteer. Dwayne is a Baytown birder and nature photographer. He has birded and photographed the Baytown Nature Center extensively and has served as the vice-president of the Friends of Baytown Nature Center.
