Description: Well folks, it’s once again time to start preparing for spring migration on the Upper Texas Coast. This summer’s drought was rough, and it was a struggle for the plants and animals on High Island. If anything good came from the drought, it was that the Chinese privet and Chinese tallow struggled to stay alive and produce viable berries. Of course some native trees were stunted as well, but the beauty of being a native is having thousands of years’ experience with hot dry summers in Texas.

As most of you know, Winnie Burkett retired last spring. Winnie built our sanctuaries and volunteer community to what they are today. We look forward to her working alongside everyone again as a volunteer and dedicated member of the High Island and Bolivar community. A young and energetic native Texan, Marc Reid, was hired in June to take over the role of Coastal Sanctuaries Manager. You will get to know him well during our fall and winter work days when he takes over as coordinator of volunteer events, work days, and management oversight. Last year, volunteers logged over 1,600 hours which helped make it one of our most successful years on record. We could not do what needs doing without the help from our dedicated volunteers. So in the true spirit of birds and volunteering, we are putting out a call for anyone and everyone who enjoys the woods of High Island to join us on the second Saturdays, October–March, to help get the trails, boardwalks, and habitat ready for yet another spring birding season on High Island.
