“I recycled, I voted, what next?” A Collaborative Primer for Civic Engagement

On November 19, 2013, Dr. Regina G. Lawrence, Director of the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at the University of Texas School of Communication, will share information about the Texas Civic Health Index published earlier this year. The Index provides a comprehensive, first-time look at civic and political engagement in Texas. It presents information about who engages in their communities, in politics, and how–and provides insight in how to encourage engagement.

The event will start at 6:00 pm with registration and networking. Dr. Lawrence will present at 6:30, and will be followed by a panel of local environmental experts working in various ways to increase engagement.

The event will be hosted at the United Way of Texas Gulf Coast Center, 50 Waugh Dr, Houston, Texas 77007-5813. RSVP requested for planning purposes.

About Dr. Regina Lawrence

Dr. Lawrence holds the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Chair in Communication in the School of Journalism at UT Austin.  Her research focuses on the role of the media in public discourse about politics and policy.  She has been chair of the Political Communication section of the American Political Science Association, book editor of the journal Political Communication, and a fellow at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard.  Dr. Lawrence’s books include  When the Press Fails: Political Power and the News Media from Iraq to Katrina (University of Chicago Press, 2007, (with W. Lance Bennett and Steven Livingston) and Hillary Clinton’s Run for the White House: Gender Politics and the Media on the Campaign Trail (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2009, co-authored with Melody Rose).  She teaches courses in political communication, women and the news, and media, youth, and civic engagement.
