Each fall, thousands of sandhill cranes congregate along the Wisconsin River just behind Leopold’s Shack—and this year is no different. The cranes, free from 2020’s pandemic-induced barriers, are flocking to Leopold Country by the thousands, and the Aldo Leopold Foundation is committed to sharing the experience with you.
This December, Save Buffalo Bayou invite you to view the wildlife spectacle in a new way as Save Buffalo Bayou bring the sights and sounds of 10,000 cranes right to your living room through free, virtual programs!
Programs will be held on December 8th, 10th, and 15th at 7:00pm CT. Registrations are required and can be submitted through the link below.

Precinct 4’s Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve is an 80-acre property featuring Marshall Lake, which spans approximately 40 acres, plus a staff building, paved roads and parking lots, restroom facilities, and 1.7 miles of trails. Houston Audubon’s survey takes place on the third Tuesday of each month starting in December. Email Mary Anne Weber to be put on the notification list.
Virtually WILD! Texas – students can interact LIVE with scientists & conservationists across the region. See archived videos on the Facebook page. The program lasts 45 minutes, and occurs twice a day. Check the website for specific times (they vary).
Grade Levels: This program is planned at a 3rd – 5th grade level, but participants of all ages will gain useful information.

Investigating Life Cycles is an inquiry-based program that allows students to investigate and compare life cycle models and record their observations. Students will learn the characteristics that allow a plant or animal to grow into a mature adult and how each stage affects its habitat and other plant and animal populations. Students will learn the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis in insects, as well as exploring the varied life cycles and interdependence of other members of the animal and plant kingdoms.
League Of Women Voters Of Houston Unit Meetings are a wonderful way to become better informed about topics of interest to our city while meeting and developing friendships with local League members. Members and guests meet for a member-led discussion of committee research on a current topic. League advocacy positions sometimes come from these meeting reports, too. Your presence will make a difference and your voice counts!

Skins & Skulls is a prepared discussion of the identification and specialized adaptations of native Texas wildlife with animal skulls and skins. Students will investigate the skulls of these animals and use field guides to identify their ‘mystery skulls’, all while learning about their animal’s habitat, food sources, and adaptations for survival.
This is not an Armand Bayou Nature Center event but is done in partnership with the Houston Audubon Society. The Audubon Society invites birders of all ages and skill levels to participate in this international event. Birders will rise with the sun and spend one day counting every bird they see. This is the largest avian census and not possible without volunteers just like you!
Armand Bayou Nature and Houston Audubon Society also need lots of feeder watchers within the circle so if you can’t make all day and would still like to participate, please sign up to be a backyard feeder watcher/counter, at the same email address.

Houston Audubon is conducting a monthly survey at Hogg Bird Sanctuary. Surveys are normally scheduled for the third Saturday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Beginners, experts, or even if you’re just curious.
Everyone will meet at the parking lot at the dead end on the south end of Westcott Street at 7:30 a.m. If the gate is locked, you may park in the upper parking lot and then walk down to the lower parking lot to meet.

The Third Saturday bird survey is a monthly event for experienced birders. It’s an opportunity for birders to help the Houston Arboretum keep a better record of the birds inhabiting the nature sanctuary throughout the year. Interested participants should bring binoculars, water, and their bird guides (if necessary).
