Deadline: 2019 Texas Environmental Excellence Awards

The Texas Environmental Excellence Awards honor achievements in environmental preservation and protection. As the state’s highest environmental honor, the Office of the Governor and commissioners from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality recognize outstanding projects from ten diverse categories such as agriculture, education, and youth. Since 1993, the TCEQ have honored more than 250 successful environmental projects and efforts. By honoring these winners, the TCEQ hopes to encourage others to initiate like-minded projects and reinforce a spirit of environmental stewardship. The TCEQ is accepting applications until September 28, 2018.

Deadline: H-GAC’s Parks and Natural Areas (PNA) Awards

Parks and Natural Areas logoThe Houston-Galveston Area Council seeks to recognize projects that expand parks and natural areas for improved quality of life, habitat, and water quality. Winning projects, which exhibit efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation, serve as models to be replicated throughout the region. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on September 28, 2018.

PNA awards honor projects in four categories:

  1. Projects Over $500,000;
  2. Projects Under $500,000;
  3. Planning Process; and
  4. Policy Tools.

Winning entries serve as models for planning and project implementation for parks and natural areas in the region. Winners will be notified in December, and the awards ceremony and half-day parks event will be in February 2019.

Flooding and the Future of Houston and Documenting Harvey @ Houston Chronicle Corporate Office

Flooding and the Future of Houston and Documenting Harvey

For the first half of the program, Jim Blackburn, co-director of the Severe Storm Prevention, Education, and Evacuation from Disaster (SPEED) Center at Rice University and director of the Bayou City Initiative, and Dr. Stephen Klineberg, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, will discuss flooding and the future of Houston.

This will be the first public conversation between Blackburn, who specializes in sustainable development, environmental law, and civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Klineberg, urban and environmental sociology expert.

For the second half, Wendy Watriss, award-winning social and political photojournalist, will lead a discussion about documenting major traumatic events from the photographer’s perspective. Watriss is joined by Houston Chronicle photojournalists Elizabeth Conley, Brett Coomer, Melissa Phillip, and Godofredo Vasquez, all of whom were on the front lines of documenting Hurricane Harvey.

The event is free. Registration is required.

There will be a tour of the cistern at 6 p.m. for the first 40 attendees to arrive. They recommend arriving by 5:45 for the tour. Allow time to find parking.

The business portion of the meeting will begin at 6:30, following the tour.

Fall Hawk Watch! @ Sheldon Lake State Park

The Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center is situated on the central migration flyway where many different species of bird can be spotted while migrating north and south, making it a great location to observe migratory birds. Fall migration is a spectacle on the gulf coast and you can find thousands of birds of prey returning south for the winter. Join the Park’s crew as they collect data to learn more about the variety of raptors who use this flyway and the health of their populations.

Meet at the Pond Center Pavilion, the first building on your left off of the Park Road. Be sure to bring binoculars, or ask to borrow a pair!

Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. Monthly Meeting @ Houston Community College Conference Center

Join Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. for their “Vegan 2nd Saturdays” Monthly Meetings, Presentations & Vegan Potlucks

Held on the “2nd Saturdays” of each month, they will enjoy a delicious vegan potluck and meeting, along with a discussion, film screening, food demo or speaker presentation on intersectional issues of veganism, animal rights, environmentalism, nonviolence, health and more. Each month will be something new! Their new venue is at the HCC Conference Center.

They are asking for a donation of $5 per person to help cover our facility rental expenses. All attendees must bring a vegan entree to share at the potluck (serving size to feed 10 people)!

Please remember to bring a vegan dish to share with the group! Their events are always vegan, so please only vegan or raw vegan foods (no animal-derived ingredients). Also bring reusable dinnerware and plates to keep the event earth-friendly. If you have questions on ingredients, feel free to contact them.

They will also feature a new discussion topic on inter sectional issues each month, such as: animal rights, ethical vegan living, vegan health & nutrition, cooking, world hunger solutions, eco-friendly living, nonviolence and more! Some months will also include film screenings and/or guest speakers and food demos.

Houston Community College Conference Center is located at 3100 Main St, 3rd Floor, Houston, TX 77002. See below for map. Free Parking is available on level 7 & 8 of the HCC Administration parking garage at Main & Elgin. Use elevator from parking garage to 3rd floor breezeway, which leads to the Conference suites. You must enter the building through the parking garage and not street-level.

Bird Survey with Houston Audubon @ Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve

Precinct 4’s Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve is an 80-acre property featuring Marshall Lake, which spans approximately 40 acres, plus a staff building, paved roads and parking lots, restroom facilities, and 1.7 miles of trails. Houston Audubon’s survey takes place on the third Monday of each month.

Audubon Bird Survey @ Hogg Bird Sanctuary

Houston Audubon is conducting a monthly survey at Hogg Bird Sanctuary. Surveys are normally scheduled for the third Saturday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Beginners, experts, or even if you’re just curious.

Everyone will meet at the parking lot at the dead end on the south end of Westcott Street at 7:30 a.m. If the gate is locked, you may park in the upper parking lot and then walk down to the lower parking lot to meet.
