CELF Citizen Science: Inquiry to Action Program @ MECA
Jan 25 @ 9:00 am – 11:30 am

CELF Citizen Science: Inquiry to Action is a semester-long program that engages educators and students in project-based STEAM learning outside of the classroom. Tailored to each school and community location, we offer professional learning workshops for teachers paired with on-site support to implement a project-based learning module that  connects students to real-world challenges in their own neighborhoods. The program culminates in a Spring 2020 Student Symposium, bringing together all participating schools to present their findings and pollution-prevention plans to community members and real-world policy makers. The program combines the development of 21st century skills with the motivation and creativity generated by solving a problem in one’s own community.

Participants in the program will:

  • Implement a project-based STEAM learning unit.

  • Participate in professional learning workshops paired with on-site educator support.

  • Collect data with AirBeam monitoring technology combined with HabitatMap crowd-sourced data sharing platform.

  • Focus on air-quality while learning pedagogical principles that apply to a range of citizen science learning opportunities.

  • Engage with local concerns through student-led inquiry.

This opportunity is grant-funded. Join one of the workshops, connect with our educators for on-site support, and come together with other classes implementing this program at our 2020 Spring Student Symposium.

If you attend one of two professional development opportunities you can attain 2-hours of Continuing Professional Education credit, receive an air quality monitor, connect with local environmental partners, and enjoy a free lunch with fellow educators. You will also gain access to the 2020 Student Symposium, the culminating event for the program.

Transition Houston: Combat Climate Change with Extinction Rebellion @ Haven's Center
Feb 4 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

We hope you’ll join Transition Houston for our first meeting of 2020 as we
Combat Climate Change with Extinction Rebellion

Socializing starts at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm at the Haven’s Center, 1827 W Alabama St, Houston, TX 77098.

THE TRUTH

We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making.

ACT NOW

We are unprepared for the danger our future holds. We face floods, wildfires, extreme weather, crop failure, mass displacement and the breakdown of society. The time for denial is over. It is time to act.

Conventional approaches of voting, lobbying, petitions and protest have failed because powerful political and economic interests prevent change. Our strategy is therefore one of non-violent, disruptive civil disobedience – a rebellion.

Historical evidence shows that we need the involvement of 3.5% of the population to succeed – in the UK that’s about 2 million people.

JOIN US

We need you – whoever you are, however much time you have – to help build a powerful movement. Our vision of change involves mass participation. Together we’re unstoppable.

About Our Speaker

Brent SullivanBrent Sullivan has lived his life in Houston, first becoming active on environmental causes via Occupy and the Tar Sands Blockade actions against the Keystone pipeline in the woods of Nacodoches.

More recently, he served on the planning committee for the People’s Climate March and started “Tuesdays at Cornyn’s” which has met with his staffers and rallied on the sidewalk every Tuesday for over 150 weeks.

In September, along with 18 others, Brent started forming Extinction Rebellion Houston, a group dedicated to driving its 4 demands into public debate and into policy through direct action. “Heading for Extinction–and what to do about it” lays bare the scope and scale of the emergency we face and makes both a moral and practical case for direct action.

Most of Brent’s family is in the oil business, so he views Extinction Rebellion’s 4th Demand for a Just Transition as foundational to the entire effort. Please join us!
