Encounter: Meeting Points on Buffalo Bayou @ North York Boat Launch

Join the Buffalo Bayou Partnership for a self-guided tour of six sites along Buffalo Bayou featuring installations by students from the University of Houston Graphic Design and Creative Writing Programs. These interactive installations express ideas about the bayou’s relation to the East End and Fifth Ward communities.

This free, afternoon event features:

  • Site-specific, text-based installations at six locations along Buffalo Bayou’s East Sector
  • Large-scale typographic/text-based messages/stories that activate and animate created by students
  • Interpretations of the history, economy, resilience, culture and community values of the East Sector neighborhoods as they relate to the bayou and green spaces
  • Self-guided tours of the installations and share ideas and opinions related to Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s future plans along the Bayou’s East Sector 
  • Participatory activities ranging from nature walks to boat tours and live entertainment and food trucks will be located at the North York Boat Launch site

Enjoy entertainment and food trucks at the North York Boat Launch.  Participate in activities at each site and share your ideas related to Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s future plans along the bayou’s East Sector.

Bringing Back Main Street Roundtables and Workshops @ City of Liberty Council Chambers

The Bringing Back Main Street initiative offers local communities a place to share best practices and engage in a regional dialogue about revitalizing and supporting vibrant downtown spaces. Each quarter, community leaders gather for a roundtable on topics ranging from small business support to sidewalk infrastructure. These ongoing roundtables add to the knowledge shared during a 2015 workshop series.

Revitalization Roundtables

H-GAC hosts quarterly roundtables to help local governments, chambers of commerce, and economic development interests promote the economic and revitalization of downtown areas.

“Bird Artistry in the Wild” with Doug Wiser @ United Way

On May 10, 2018, Houston Audubon will host a presentation by artist Doug Hiser entitled “Bird Artistry in the Wild” at the United Way, 50 Waugh Drive. Hiser will discuss his artistic process during safaris in Africa, Australia, South America, Nepal, and the Galapagos Islands. The event is free and open to the public. Join H-GAC for the Parks and Natural Areas (PNA) Roundtable on Monday, September 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at H-GAC Conference Room A, Second Floor.

On the Agenda

  • Representatives from Asakura Robinson will give an overview of the award-winning MD Anderson Prairie project
  • Representatives from League City will give an overview of the award-winning Dr. Ned & Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center Management Plan
  • H-GAC staff will update the roundtable on activities, including the current awards and recognition program, the Facebook group, and the parks director survey

The PNA Roundtable serves as a forum for discussion of issues related to parks and natural areas, promotes the PNA Award Program, and maintains a regional inventory of parks. The PNA roundtable facilitates information exchange and planning efforts between various stakeholders and collaborators to protect and preserve parks and natural areas across the region.

Hurricane Harvey Talanoa Dialogues @ 1st Unitarian Universalist Church

Image result for texas impactYou are invited to participate in a unique roundtable discussion about the progress of Hurricane Harvey and the implications the recovery has for Houston’s future. Discussions are structured in a “Talanoa” framework. Talanoa is a traditional word used in Fiji and across the Pacific to reflect a process of inclusive, participatory, and transparent dialogue. The purpose of Talanoa is to share stories, build empathy and to make wise decisions for the collective good.
