Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge along with the Friends of Trinity River Refuge will be hosting the annual “Free Family Fishing Day” on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 9:00am – 11:00am at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. It is the one day in the state of Texas that anyone can fish or crab without a license on public waters. We will have fishing poles and bait for those who need it along with experienced fishermen who can help children with baiting hooks and casting techniques.  All ages are invited to this free event.
Champion Lake is located at the end of CR 417, two miles east of FM 1409 in southern Liberty County. This is approximately 10 miles south of Dayton, TX from Hwy 90 or about six miles north of I-10 at the Cove exit (FM 565). Call the Refuge office at 936/336-9786 for more information. You may want to bring a lawn chair as seating is limited.
Learn the basics of fishing through hands-on activities. Take away a fishing fun pack and enter the drawing for door prizes.
Equipment and bait provided or bring your own. No fishing license necessary. Adults must accompany children. Bring sun protection and water. Registration and start time is 9:00 A.M.
What to bring:
- Be sure to get a park pass (either from park office, or self-pay station)
- Questions about local fishing
- Clothing suitable for being outdoors
- Bring your own water and snacks
Rangers will be on hand at Sunset Marina Park Store inside Lake Livingston State Park throughout this time frame to help bait hooks, rig tackle, and teach the basics of fishing. Bait and tackle is provided, and limited quantities of loaner fishing poles will be available.
They recommend bringing a bottle of water and wearing comfortable, flat shoes when participating in any activity.
Regular park admission fees of $5 per adult ages 13 and up apply; no additional charge for activities.
No reservations necessary.
Adults and Youth 12 years and older can learn the basics of fishing through hands-on activities
Topics will include equipment, knot tying and tackle assembly; casting and fishing skills; using a net to land fish; fish ID and habitats; regulations and ethics; and safety and stewardship.
No fishing experience necessary. Event is free. Adults must accompany children. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks if they need them. Class will take place indoors. Start time is 11:00 A.M.
Meet Precinct 4’s Trails As Parks staff at the canoe launch. Closed-toe shoes, a hat, and sunscreen are recommended. Fishing is allowed at Marshall Lake with a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department fishing license. Thank you for your interest in the “All aboard! There’s a place for you in the maritime community!â€Â Art Contest sponsored by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of the American States (CIP-OAS). We welcome submissions from students enrolled in grades K-12 living in the Americas (North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean). Students living outside the Americas are welcome to apply, provided they have one or more parents on active duty with the U. Students are asked to submit an original poster that creatively depicts ways to embrace diversity and inclusion in the maritime community and highlight the broad range of opportunities the industry has to offer. The theme reflects the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2019 World Maritime Day Theme. Students should submit an original artwork that based on the contest theme description below:
Seaborn transportation is one of the oldest industries—and the most exciting! More than 90% of the world’s goods and energy travel by ship! The diversity of opportunities in the maritime industry is as diverse as the ocean itself. Seafaring is an exciting career that allows you to travel the world and absorb different cultures. You can also become a successful member of the marine industry without ever getting your feet wet! An opportunity to be a maritime lawyer, accountant, engineer, medical professional, or scientist, could be in your future!
The marine industry is evolving. Now, more than ever, there are technical training and education programs available to people of all backgrounds to ensure a rewarding career in the maritime sector. Today, many people are finding more opportunities in leadership, administrative, and decision-making roles in addition to seafaring jobs.
Successful members of the marine industry can come from any educational, geographic, or cultural background. Can you think of a way to embrace diversity in the marine industry, either on a ship or in a shore-side role? Or, if you’ve ever thought about pursuing a career in the marine industry, can you artistically show us how? Students are asked to submit an original poster depicting creative and imaginative ideas about how to make shipping more inclusive, or how they can chart a future in the maritime industry.

Night hikes at 7 and 8 p.m., mini owl prowl at 7:30 p.m., cabin tours, winter bird craft, pond fishing and live animal time. Campfire, s’mores and tacos. (Vegan and gluten-free options available). Tacos catered by Tacos A GoGo – veggie, chicken, beef tacos with corn/flour tortillas available. Reservation includes 2 tacos per person.

Try your luck to catch recently stocked rainbow trout! Daily bag limit for trout is 5/day/person. All other TPWD rules apply. Equipment provided or bring your own. Hat and sunscreen recommended.
