Our first goal in reversing global warming is drawdown. This is the point where the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere levels off and begins to decline. If we get moving, we could reach drawdown by 2050.  At this event co-sponsored by Green Building Resource Center and Houston Climate Protection Alliance, the Climate Action Team of First Unitarian Universalist Church will summarize the book, Drawdown, then break into groups to focus on particular solutions:  organic farming and land use, family planning, refrigerant management, or your favorite action issue.

Scheitle for the release of their book, Religion vs. Science: What Religious People Really Think (Oxford University Press 2017) for an event sponsored by the Religion and Public Life Program with support from the Program in Jewish Studies at Rice University.

Religion vs. Science is based on a five-year study of religious Americans’ views of science, called the Religious Understandings of Science (RUS) study. The RUS study surveyed 10,000 Americans about their views on the relationship between religion and science, as well as specific scientific issues such as stem cell research, evolution and creation, science education, and others. The survey was in addition to more than 300 in-person interviews.  Pastor Lee Hsia of Houston’s First Baptist Church and Rabbi Geoff Mitelman of Sinai and Synapses will moderate the conversation and provide unique perspectives on the book’s content.

Harris County has long had a program to buyout flood-prone homes and structures, ensuring people and structures are out of harm’s way and, further, that recurring costs do not befall the homeowner or the community. But, there is a broader opportunity for buyouts to be a part of a comprehensive multi-purpose strategy for assuring more resilient and livable neighborhoods, through coordination with flood control infrastructure, parks, and housing.

The Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium is bringing together leading experts on the topic of buyouts from across the country to share best practices and knowledge in order to inform and help guide local decision-makers during the region’s recovery from Harvey.

You are invited to join the Greater Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium for the discussion on buyout best practices that will include:

• How to work with (and around) federal requirements
• How to coordinate with different agencies
