Texas A&M AgriLife Extension GIFT program seeks Interns

AgriLife Extension’s Green Infrastructure for Texas (GIFT) program with an environmental literacy grant from EPA is seeking interns for a High School Career Development Internship Program focused on Green Infrastructure (GI) job skills. The primary focus is nursery production of native wetland and coastal prairie plants to be used in GI projects. Other topics covered include watershed and non-point source pollution issues in communities, what is green infrastructure (including its purposes and variety of practices). The goal is for students to identify green infrastructure practices suitable for different areas and be able to obtain National Green Infrastructure Certification Program certification upon graduation from High School if they so choose.

There are weekly field trips to local GI project sites as well as presentations by industry professionals who have volunteered to share about their jobs and projects. Much of our learning will be hands on and experiential in nature. Students are asked to complete an individual project and give a presentation of what they learned at the conclusion of the 12-week session.

At the conclusion of the student’s participation in the program, interns will receive a $500 stipend.

Schedule

Each internship consists of a 12-week session. There are three sessions for each of the next two school years (2022-23 and 2023-24). Each session will have up to 8 students, limitations are due to the workspace available at the wetland nurseries where students will be working. The first three sessions are scheduled for:

  • Aug. 22 – Nov. 11, 2022 (application closed)
  • Nov. 14, 2022 through Feb. 24, 2023 (application closed)
  • Feb. 27 through May 26, 2023 (applications due Feb. 7)

Interns will meet 2-3 days a week depending on the students’ schedules and availability. Interns should arrive at 4:30pm and will return to the office by 7:00pm.
