Prairies are hot! There has been a recent surge of interest in building prairies in
our areas. Why? Prairies can help us meet the challenges of the 21st century – they
provide a place to decompress from a stressful world, connect us to our heritage in
an increasingly globalized world, and even provide economic benefits like flood
control and maybe even biofuels. Yet, our communities are also re-embracing prairies
as a way of boosting biodiversity. These grasslands are critical to migratory birds,
dwindling frogs populations, and endemic wildflowers. Learn how you can become
involved in the work of bringing back Houston’s Heartland-the Coastal Prairie- for
the benefit of city dwellers, rural interests, and birdlife.
