  1. 136 Texas plants apply for new permits (Matthew Tresaugue – Houston Chronicle, 07/12/2011)
    The EPA announced that the 136 industrial plants in Texas with state-issued permits have agreed to apply for new ones. The EPA regional administrator for Texas says that the companies are able to convert their permits without job losses. Some state officials and at least ten industry groups are upset over this announcement and are challenging the EPA’s actions in federal court.

    Environmentalists are fighting against coal-fired power plants in Texas, and are showing that a new plant in Matagorda County could have devastating effects. They argue that Houston ozone levels could change and put the communities at greater risk of health problems, such as asthma.

  3. Texas aglow with effort to save the incandescent bulb (Richard Simon – Los Angeles Times, 07/09/2011)
    Republicans in Texas are opposed to a federal law to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favor of more efficient lamps. Texas governor, Rick Perry, recently signed a law that declares that incandescent bulbs that are made and sold in Texas do not involve interstate commerce, which therefore, are not subject to federal regulation.
