Houston Parks and Recreation Department seeks NAtural Resources Superintendent

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhance the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Natural ResourcesSuperintendent to join its Greenspace Operations team.  The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:

  • Conducts project management of habitat restoration projects, including identifying project sites, creating project goals and timelines, and overseeing budgets.
  • Administers grants in cooperation with funding entities and manages implementation in natural areas.
  • Writes applications for and administers conservation-related grants. 
  • Maintains inventory and catalog with GIS features of all natural features under HPARD’s jurisdiction (lakes, ponds, undeveloped park land, wildlife species, etc.). 
  • Oversees implementation of the City of Houston’s Natural Areas Ordinance.
  • Creates management plans and habitat assessments for the implementation of the Nature Preserve Ordinance.
  • Manages Natural Resources and native horticulture staff, ensuring coordination between habitat restoration projects and plant propagation operations.
  • Manages, hires, trains, and evaluates performance of personnel.
  • Oversees environmental research projects and data collection.
  • Will be required to be on-call on a rotational basis throughout the calendar year, and report to work as required during all significant weather events or random incidents. 
  • Prepares periodic employee performance evaluations, reviews contents with the employee.
  • Administers departmental policy and procedures relative to operational and personnel activities. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position occasionally requires stooping or bending and light lifting (up to 20 pounds) may be required.  There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions.  

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS 
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Field Biology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Science, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of experience in land management, habitat restoration, ecological research, or a related field are required, with at least two of the years in a supervisory capacity. Knowledge of GIS is required.

A Master’s degree in a field closely related to the work being performed may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.
 
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid driver’s license and comply with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
