Harris County seeks Volunteer Coordinator

The volunteer coordinator professionally recruits, coordinates, and supervises the park volunteers in specified work, projects programs, or activities within Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center to support and help strengthen public programs and park development. Under the direct supervision of the park manager, the volunteer coordinator is a friendly and patient individual with a “can do attitude,” possessing good communication skills and the ability to interact well with the public. In carrying out daily work assignments, supervision may be exercised over work crews or volunteers that may be assigned to a program or project. Applicant should be self-motivated, willing to work both indoors and outdoors, and not be afraid to get their hands dirty; yet able to conduct a variety of activities in a normal day. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adapts to a variety of situations, personalities, and available resources
  • Alert to volunteer and public safety and work hazards at all times
  • Answers correspondence and questions from the public and media related to park programs and facilities
  • Conducts advance planning of work itineraries
  • Coordinates volunteer schedules for events, programs, and projects
  • Develops volunteer training manuals and park literature
  • Drafts and publishes a volunteer newsletter
  • Edits social media pages and website content
  • Implements volunteer recognition programs, training, and orientations
  • Interacts directly and works with staff, interns, volunteers, and other departments in job duties
  • Liaison between other volunteer organization leaders as a recruitment avenue
  • Maintain quality and appearance of the park, structures, projects, displays, and resources
  • Perform Park maintenance and assists with projects as needed
  • Organizes and maintain volunteer applications, files, records, and service hours by a database system
  • Plans, conducts, and assists with public educational programs for various groups and organizations with general natural/living history topics
  • Plans and helps execute special events and festivals held throughout the year
  • Promotes volunteer cohesiveness, cooperation, and interest
  • Recruits and classifies applicants for volunteer work
  • Submits volunteer service grant applications for corporate donations
  • Trains and supervises volunteers in assignments
  • Work varying shifts including weekends and evenings
  • Writes materials for park communications including social media posts, newspaper articles, email newsletters, flyers, and more

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • A four-year B.S. degree in science, social sciences, human resources or related curriculum and 1-year related experience 

OR

  • Combination of a 2-year Associates degree and a minimum of 3-years related experience 

OR

  • High school diploma or GED with 5-years minimum experience in a similar position or field of work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Experienced and patient working with children and the public
  • General knowledge of outdoor activities and skills
  • General knowledge of local natural history, flora and fauna
  • General knowledge of Texas history
  • Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and Power Point.
  • Intermediate knowledge of SignUp Genius, Better Impact, and Facebook
  • Knowledge of publication techniques
  • Strong public speaking and public relations skills 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions
  • Write routine reports, correspondence, and informational articles for publication and program publicity for the media
  • Maintain records; speak effectively before public groups of visitors or employees, both formally and informally.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, feel and reach with hands and arms; frequently required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell; regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is periodically exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; vibration; night-time shifts; and routine use of a computer monitor. The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Harris County Precinct 3 strives to maintain a drug and alcohol-free environment in the workplace. All new employees are required to pass a drug and alcohol screening test and may be subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Requires a post-offer criminal history record check.

HOURS:

  • 40 Hours per Week / Flexible
  • Must be available to work two to three weekends per month and regularly scheduled evenings.

SALARY:

  • Salary commensurate per experience
  • Based on 26 pay periods

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
