West U Shred-a-thon.

To help prevent privacy invasion or identity theft, any individuals can destroy unneeded papers free of charge at an upcoming public service event. Continuing its fourth year, the City of West University Place Spring Shred-A-Thon, starting at the city’s RecyclExpress facility, 5004 Dincans Street , Saturday, May 2, at 9:00 a.m. to noon.

West University ‘s all-volunteer Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Board invites and urges everyone in the Houston-Galveston area to come take advantage of the event.

Easy to reach and find, West U’s RecyclExpress is in Houston , just one block west of Kirby Drive, between Westpark and Bissonnet. Shred-A-Thon traffic will flow south from Westpark, just a block south of the US59/Southwest Freeway feeder, through the facility, exiting onto Dincans toward Bissonnet.

“Whether from individuals or businesses, Shred-A-Thon will accept and shred up to five standard file boxes of unwanted, unneeded papers from every vehicle that drives through,” says Board Chairman Orval Marlow. Those papers, he explains, can include computer printouts, letters, credit card receipts and carbons, cancelled checks, old school papers, obsolete stationery, plus “apartment leases, tax documents and  other documents that are no longer valid or obsolete.”

Rain or shine, specially equipped trucks supplied by Shred-It will serve all comers at the West U Shred-A-Thon at least through noon, says Marlow. Since RecyclExpress is a 24/7 drop-off facility, everyone from everywhere in the Houston-Galveston area is welcome to drop off such other recyclables as glass containers, plastic containers, clean box-weight cardboard, newspaper and other non-critical paper and aluminum cans at any hour of any day all year.

“But,” concludes Board Vice-Chairman Steve Stelzer, “it’d be a risky shame to miss our Shred-A-Thon’s destruction of documents that, if intact, thieves and snoops could use to harm you.” For more information on RecyclExpress, click to http://www.westu.org.
