Earth Day, Career Fairs, Professional Development for Teachers, Houston 2020 Visions: Green Corridors, Fireflies, Rain Barrel Workshop, Biodiversity Loss, Nature4Health Week, Green Jobs and more

Earth Day Houston, Sunday, April 18, 2021

Interested in celebrating Earth Day, electric vehicles, a farmers’ market, green films, and energy? Discovery Green is hosting Earth Day Houston presented by Green Mountain Energy in partnership with Citizens’ Environmental Coalition to educate, inspire and encourage action towards the protection of the environment. Join us on Sunday April 18 from noon – 5 p.m. to participate in the activities listed below:

  • Electric Cars. The Houston Electric Auto Association, Harris County Pollution Control, and Green Mountain Energy in partnership with Evolve Houston will be showcasing a variety of electric vehicles. Volunteers will be available to answer questions about switching to an EV and pairing it with solar energy for a clean ride.
  • Green Films. A series of short films about Houston’s environment–ranging from sea turtles will be on display at the Anheuser-Busch stage from noon to 3:00 p.m.
  • Food. Urban Harvest farmers’ market and Churrascos food truck will be on-site serving healthy snacks and meals.
  • Live Mural Painting. Throughout the day, Houston artists will be painting murals that celebrate the richness and diversity of our community, culture, and natural environment. Art will be on display at Discovery Green through October.
  • Exhibitors. Almost 20 exhibitors will be sharing information about parks, pollution, plants, plastics, and a plethora of other environmental topics.
  • The Nexus of Energy, Climate, and Equity in Houston: Kicking off at 4:00 p.m. with remarks from Mayor Sylvester Turner, a panel of experts and community leaders will examine the freeze in February 2021, how electricity production affects the environment, and what can be done to protect vulnerable populations. The discussion will be held in-person on the Anheuser-Busch stage and livestreamed through Youtube from 4 to 5 p.m. Livestream registration at www.discoverygreen.com/earthday.

Public Comment Period for the Draft 2022 State Water Plan open through May 26

The Texas Water Development Board will receive public comments on the Draft 2022 State Water Plan until 5 p.m. on May 26, 2021. The TWDB will publish notice in the Texas Register on April 23, 2021, of the Board’s intent to adopt the 2022 State Water Plan later this summer. The Board will receive public comment on the Draft 2022 State Water Plan at a hearing to be held on May 24, 2021, at 1 p.m. The hearing will be held in Austin at the Stephen F. Austin Building, 1700 North Congress Avenue, Room 170, and via GoToWebinar. The draft plan and additional information about the hearing are posted on the TWDB website.

A Flock/Kettle/Wake/Congress/Parliament of Birdy Events

Spring has officially sprung, and along the Texas Gulf Coast, that means we’re in the beginning of the annual Great Bird Migration, as millions of birds who spent the winter in Central and South America and the Caribbean make their way across our state on their way to their homes in North America. Texas lies squarely within the Central Flyway, making it one of the world’s premiere spots for watching birds. And the greater Houston environmental community has got you covered.

  • Houston Audubon provides beautiful spots to do your bird-watching at its High Island sanctuaries in Chambers County.
  • Through April 19, the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council presents the annual FeatherFest, a birding and nature photography contest. Learn more at galvestonfeatherfest.com. Only a few spots are left!
  • Through May 8, Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is hosting its Spring Fling at Quintana Neotropic Bird Sanctuary. This is an amazing opportunity to see and celebrate the return of migratory songbirds as they arrive at stopover habitat along the coast. Knowledgeable GCBO volunteers and staff will be on hand at Quintana to answer your questions, keep a daily list, and sell water, snacks, and field guides.
  • From April 19 through May 7, you can do your part in helping migrating birds make their way safely home by participating in Lights Out Texas, a statewide effort to turn off all unnecessary electric lights from 11 p.m.-6 p.m. Find more information at tcatexas.org.
  • You and your friends and family can participate in World Migratory Bird Day on May 8. Find an event near you, or create your own. Learn more at migratorybirdday.org.
  • On May 15-16, the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory will host one of its occasional Bird Banding events virtually, allowing you to watch volunteers putting bands on the legs of bird from the comfort of your home. For more information, see the Facebook event.

New Long-Term Monitoring Reports Available

Two new long-term monitoring reports from Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary are now available online. The Stetson Bank Long-Term Monitoring: 2015-2018 Synthesis Report documents methods, analyses, and results from annual long-term monitoring of fish and benthic communities at Stetson Bank over a period of four years, 2015–2018. The Long-Term Monitoring at East and West Flower Garden Banks: 2019 Annual Report  summarizes fish and benthic community observations and water quality data collected from East Flower Garden Bank and West Flower Garden Bank in 2019, along with nearly 30 years of historical monitoring data.


NOAA Planet Stewards Grants

Through federal funding opportunities of up to $5,000, NOAA Planet Stewards supports educators working in formal and informal educational settings to carry out hands-on action-based stewardship projects with elementary through college age students, as well as the general public. Stewardship projects must make a substantive, measurable impact on an environmental issue related to the educator’s community. Projects should focus on the conservation, restoration, and/or protection of human communities and/or natural resources from environmental issues. The deadline to apply is June 5, 2021. Improving Water Quality Through Coastal Community Programs

On April 15, 2021, from 11 a.m.-noon, the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Brian Sims will discuss H-GAC’s Homeowner Wastewater Assistance Program as part of the Clean Coast Texas Lunch & Learn Series, a program presented by The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (Texas State University) and the General Land Office. Break Free From Plastics webinar

On April 15, 2021, Environment Texas and partnering organizations will host a webinar on how Texas can protect wildlife and public health by getting rid of the most harmful waste, single-use plastics. The webinar will feature Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D-El Paso), a member of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. To register for the webinar, go to this Google form.


Native Plant Society of Texas meeting: Texas Nature Trackers

On April 15, 2021, beginning at 7 p.m., the Houston chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will host its monthly meeting featuring a presentation by biologist Craig Hensley of Texas Parks and Wildlife. He will discuss the Texas Nature Trackers program, which utilizes community scientists to help collect valuable data on the state’s flora and fauna utilizing the app known as iNaturalist. He will review the app and related website and share how the data from iNaturalist contributes to conservation across Texas. 2021 Texas Land Conservation Conference

Continuing through April 16, 2021, the Texas Land Trust Council will hold its 25th Annual Texas Land Conservation Conference virtually. the conference is the preeminent statewide meeting for anyone working in the field of land and water conservation, private landowners interested in conserving their land, government, business and NGO agency partners, and any person interested in learning more about these important issues in Texas. For more information and to register, visit web.cvent.com.


2021 Power Shift Convergence Conference

From April 16-25, 2021, the 2021 Power Shift Conference will virtually bring thousands of young people and students to gather the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to halt pending climate collapse and build the future. Nature4Health Week

Continuing through April 17, 2021, Harris County Precinct 4’s Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve will host Nature4Health Week, which focuses on the health benefits of connecting with nature. This annual one-day event has been stretched out over an entire week to safely allow multiple offerings of programs, activities, and guest presentersincluding outdoor recreation, environmental education, a blood drive, a family-friendly movie night, a bat chat, and more. Invasives Beware

On April 17, 2021, from 9-11 a.m., Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center will hold an event in which park staff and volunteers to assist with habitat management and enhancement projects throughout Jones Park by removing invasive species, managing the forest understory, and planting trees. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, see the Facebook event.


Adopt-A-Beach Coastal Cleanup

On April 17, 2021, from 9 a.m.-noon, the Texas General Land Office is hosting the annual Spring Coastal Cleanup at beaches along the Texas Gulf Coast, including several in the greater Houston-Galveston region. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of drinking water, as well as gloves. Adopt-A-Beach will provide all necessary materials. 2021 Texas State Legislative Trainings

The Coalition for Environment, Equity, and Resilience is holding two virtual training sessions for the 87th session of the Texas Legislature. The first, on April 17 at 10 a.m., will introduce the Texas legislative process, how to identify your representatives, and the role the community plays in shaping bills and policy change (register here). The second, on April 24 at 10 a.m., focuses on specific bills and policies, storytelling, and interactive processes to support advocacy (register here ).

From April 19 through May 7, 2021, the Texas Conservation Alliance, the City of Houston, Houston Audubon and other partnering organizations encourage all Texas residents, businesses and other entities to participate in “Lights Out Texas!” by dimming non-essential lighting from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. With the simple flip of a switch, each of us can do our part to protect millions of migrating birds soaring across our Lone Star sky. Certify your business or residence with Lights Out for Wildlife. You will receive a certificate to celebrate your commitment to conservation and you’ll inspire others to join in. While “Lights Out Nights” in Houston runs April 19 – May 7, everyone is encouraged to turn building lights out nightly if possible, throughout the spring until migration in Texas ends June 15. Texan By Nature 2021 Conservation Summit

On April 20, 2021, Texan By Nature will hold its 2021 Conservation Summit, which focuses on bringing conservation and business leaders together for rich, impact-focused dialogue and networking. This year’s event, with the theme “The Future of Conservation”, features a mix of limited in-person attendance as well as a free virtual attendance option. Attendees will hear from the six 2020 Conservation Wranglers, businesses, and organizations that are making positive impacts for Texas’ communities, the economy, and the state’s diverse and beautiful natural resources. Unplugged Adventure: Using eBird on the Katy Prairie

On April 20, 2021, from noon-1:30 p.m., the Katy Prairie Conservancy will host an Unplugged Adventure webinar featuring ikayla House and John Berner, who will discuss using the eBird app on the Katy Prairie. eBird is a free app for your phone that allows you to record the birds you see and makes this information available to birders around the world. Houston Heights Compostable Dropoff

Thanks to high school student and Girl Scout Monica Orozco and Zero Waste Houston, on Wednesdays through June 2, neighbors will be able to drop their food waste and compostables off at the Historic Heights Fire Station (107 W 12th St.) for FREE!This 8-week pilot program, which will serve as Monica’s Girl Scouts Gold Award Project, will run on Wednesdays from 5-8 PM through June 2. On April 24, 2021, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Moody Gardens will host a free Educator Open House for all active employees of a public, private, parochial school, home school educators, early childhood educators and informal educators. The North American Association for Environmental Educators will hold its 50th Anniversary Conference in October. Environmental educators will gather virtually over two weeks to connect and share about “The Power of Connection.” The deadline for proposal submission is May 7, 2021. Learn more at naaee.org.   • In early 2017, Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Artificial Reef Program created a new underwater oasis for fish and fishermen with a 371-foot cargo ship called The Kraken. Just months after sending the Kraken to the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, biologists return to investigate one of the Texas Gulf Coast’s largest artificial reefs
  • Join a group of Harlingen high school students as they discover birding. These South Texas teens realize they have some amazing birds right in their own backyard
