The Houston Zoo’s Sustainability Story

The Houston Zoo’s Sustainability Story, presented by the Committee on the Environment, offers a unique behind-the-scenes tour of the Zoo and will focus on its sustainable design and operations practices and how they contribute to the organization’s mission to save animals in the wild. Through a combination of lecture and guided tour, the session will cover how the Houston Zoo’s award-winning sustainability practices translate to the built environment. Highlights will include the Zoo’s innovative source reduction strategies, management of unique waste streams, energy and water conservation efforts, habitat creation on site, and sustainable material selection. The session will spotlight the sustainability strategies of recent exhibits that have transformed the Zoo’s campus, and it will preview several upcoming projects that are slated to be the Zoo’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified buildings.
