Hermann Park Bird Survey @ Hermann Park

Volunteer Coordinator: Jim WinnYellow-crowned Night-Heron

The public is invited to join us at Hermann Park on the second Monday morning of each month. There is no charge for these bird walks and children are welcome. We meet in parking lot “D” on the south side of the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage.

Directions

From Hermann Park Drive parking lot “D” shares the entrance with parking lot “E”. From the fountain in front of Hotel ZaZa, drive around on Hermann Park Dr.(also shown as Golf Course Dr. on some maps) past the Museum of Natural Science and McGovern Centennial Gardens. The entrance to Parking Lot D will be on your right side, just before you get to the large lots in front of the main zoo entrance. The entrance will say Parking Lot “E”. Go in there. Parking Lot “D” is behind Lot “E”.

Habitat Work Days @ NOA I Bldg, UHCL

There are many opportunities for you to get involved with EIH’s WaterSmart Habitat. Whether you’re looking for community service hours, or just a change of pace. Habitat volunteers help weed and mulch flower beds, plant native plants, maintain pathways, and trim trees and bushes. Volunteers may also help clean out the pond on select work days.

Volunteering at EIH is a great way to get your organization involved in the community. Please call in advance if you have a large group or if you would like to schedule your group on a different day. WG Jones Volunteer Service @ WG Jones State Forest

1. Only a certain number of people will be allowed at each garden area. Be prepared to grow where you’re planted (work where you’re most needed)!

2. You must supply your own gloves and tools.

3. Park at the education building, not in front of the office.

4. if you are more comfortable wearing a face mask, you are more than welcome to.

5. Limits on the number of people should allow for 6 feet social distancing. Be mindful of the distance.

6. As always, bring adequate sun protection and water.

7. if you have been exposed to COVID-19, please quarantine for 14 days before joining us at the Forest.

EPIC Service Club in Baytown, TX @ Eddie V. Grey Wetlands Education Center

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center and the Baytown Nature Center are hosting a free service learning club for high school teens.

Under the supervision of Christina Butcher, Baytown Nature Center Naturalist, and Wetlands Center Education Coordinator, Jina Faith, high school students, who wish to make a difference in the community, make new friends, and/or gain volunteer hours while having fun, meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-5 pm.

Participation in small conservation projects develops teamwork skills and environmental responsibility to enable the students to pick, plan and implement a larger conservation project of their choice.

AgriLife Master Volunteer Entomology Advanced Training Certification @ Webinar

Over the course of 8 weeks and over 32 instructional hours, you can gain a greater understanding of entomology, integrated pest management in the garden, landscape and home, be able to identify common insects, spiders and arthropods in Texas, learn about butterfly gardening and native pollinators and much more. iNaturalist training, invasive insects to watch in Texas, medical entomology, using dichotomous keys for identification will also be covered.

KPC Greenhouse Volunteers @ Memorial Park Conservancy Greenhouse

The Memorial Park Conservancy has generously offered Katy Prairie Conservancy use of their greenhouse while the Native Seed Nursery at KPC’s field office in Waller is being renovated. Volunteers will help grow plants that will be used for various Katy Prairie Conservancy spring projects and for the Great Grow Out. The Memorial Park Conservancy Greenhouse is located in Memorial Park on the south side of Memorial Drive. All are welcome, no experience necessary.

Workdays are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
