Beach & Bay Day: Come Out & Play @ Galveston Island State Park

We’re waiving all entrance fees for folks to experience the best of our park! Totally free family fun, marine life education and wildlife encounters.  Join the park staff and the Friends of Galveston Island State Park to see what all the buzz is about.

Paddle N Pedal Fest @ Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve

The Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce in partnership with CHI St. Luke’s Hospital – The Vintage, Harris County Pct. 4 “Trails as Parks”, and the Greater Houston Off-road Biking Association (GHORBA) is pleased to present a new, family-friendly outdoor festival to celebrate the tremendous amenities available on the SH 249 Corridor: Paddle N Pedal Fest.

Paddle N Pedal will operate at two adjacent locations:

  • NATURE PRESERVE SITE:
    KICKERILLO-MISCHER PRESERVE

  • FESTIVAL SITE:
    CHI ST. LUKE’S HOSPITAL-The Vintage

The Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve also has volunteer opportunities available for this event! If you are interested in volunteering for any activities located on the CHI St. Luke’s portion of the festival, please sign up at signup.com. If you are interested in volunteering for any activities located in the Preserve, please sign up at volunteerhou.org. If you are willing to move back and for the between the event sites, the Preserve will put you where is needed.

Texas Game Wardens’ Spring Outdoor Celebration @ Mont Belvieu City Park

On April 21, 2018, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Game Wardens will host their third annual Spring Outdoor Celebration at Mont Belvieu City Park. Texas Game Wardens are excited to introduce outdoor recreational activities to the youth and other citizens. Participation in all activities is free. Activities include archery, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing, door prizes, and much more. They hope to promote involvement and utilization of the natural resources within the community. Congressional and State Senate Candidate Forum @ Chinese Community Center

On May 14, 2018, from 7-8:30 p.m., Mi Familia Vota and OCA-Houston will cohost a Candidate Forum for candidates in the primary runoff elections for Congressional Districts 7 and 22 and Texas State Senate District 17. Among the topics that will be addressed are the environment, immigration, education, and gun reform. Free Family Fishing Day Event at Trinity River Refuge @ Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. Champion Lake Public Use Area

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge along with the Friends of Trinity River Refuge will be hosting the annual “Free Family Fishing Day” on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 9:00am – 11:00am at the Champion Lake Public Use Area.  It is the one day in the state of Texas that anyone can fish or crab without a license on public waters.  We will have fishing poles and bait for those who need it along with experienced fishermen who can help children with baiting hooks and casting techniques.  All ages are invited to this free event.

Champion Lake is located at the end of CR 417, two miles east of FM 1409 in southern Liberty County. This is approximately 10 miles south of Dayton, TX from Hwy 90 or about six miles north of I-10 at the Cove exit (FM 565). Call the Refuge office at 936/336-9786 for more information. You may want to bring a lawn chair as seating is limited.

Go Fish! @ Galveston Island State Park

Learn the basics of fishing through hands-on activities. Take away a fishing fun pack and enter the drawing for door prizes.

Equipment and bait provided or bring your own. No fishing license necessary. Adults must accompany children. Bring sun protection and water. Registration and start time is 9:00 A.M.

What to bring:

  • Be sure to get a park pass (either from park office, or self-pay station)
  • Questions about local fishing
  • Clothing suitable for being outdoors
  • Bring your own water and snacks

Fishing with a Ranger @ Lake Livingston State Park

Rangers will be on hand at Sunset Marina Park Store inside Lake Livingston State Park throughout this time frame to help bait hooks, rig tackle, and teach the basics of fishing. Bait and tackle is provided, and limited quantities of loaner fishing poles will be available.

They recommend bringing a bottle of water and wearing comfortable, flat shoes when participating in any activity.

Regular park admission fees of $5 per adult ages 13 and up apply; no additional charge for activities.

No reservations necessary.

Learn to Fish @ Walls Hall
Jul 21 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Adults and Youth 12 years and older can learn the basics of fishing through hands-on activities

Topics will include equipment, knot tying and tackle assembly; casting and fishing skills; using a net to land fish; fish ID and habitats; regulations and ethics; and safety and stewardship.

No fishing experience necessary. Event is free. Adults must accompany children. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks if they need them. Class will take place indoors. Start time is 11:00 A.M.
